MOUNTAIN MAN BOWIE

Winner of the Best Fighting Knife Award at the 2002 PKA Custom Knife Show in Denver, this impressive Bowie style knife features a Sambar Elk Crown and Ivory handle. Now on display in a private collection in New York, this knife and sheath represents a contemporary look back in time when the mountainous West was relatively unexplored virgin territory. White men who ventured into what was then described as "The Vast Wilderness" quickly adopted native customs in order to survive harsh elements and thereby gain acceptance by inhabitants of the Plateau and Mountainous regions associated with the Missouri River. Viewed with suspicion and in some cases contempt, Mountain Men eventually earned a place among the Indians, taking wives and rearing offspring of their own among people who now are considered the first true environmentalists in this hemisphere.

Feathers, a fox cape, and bone and beads strung on braided horsehair adorn the sheath in typical Indian fashion. The heavy blade, natural handle materials and a sheath that is true to Native American customs reflect elements of the spirit world and strong medicine. A collectible of great character, this unique ensemble focuses on the present while remaining true to the past.
